Discrimination
Discrimination on grounds of race, nationality, gender, marital status, pregnancy, sexual preference, parenthood, disability or lawful political or religious belief is ILLEGAL. The Student Union and the University does not tolerate any kind of discrimination.
The University has policies that seek to promote equal opportunity and offer specialist assistance to overcome any disadvantage. If you believe that you have suffered ANY form of discrimination, ranging from sexist or racist attitudes in your academic studies to explicit intimidation, requests for sexual favours or rape contact (as appropriate) a Union officer, harassment advisor, student counsellor or the University’s Equal Opportunity Officer.
You have the right to take your complaints to the Equal Opportunity Commission.
Harassment
Harassment based on race, nationality, gender, disability, sexual preference, political or religious beliefs is also ILLEGAL. The Student Union and the University does not tolerate any forms of harassment.
Harassment can be visual, verbal, or physical. If you feel that you are being harassed you should, if possible, make the perceived harasser aware that you feel their behaviour towards you constitutes harassment.
If this does not change the problem behaviour, or you feel too intimidated, you may consult, in confidence, one of the campus advisors or the Union. There is a formal harassment procedure established by the University should you need to use it. (See the listed advisors at the end of this information).

Disability
The University has a range of policies that support the right of people with disabilities or chronic conditions to fully participate in University life.
At the Gippsland Campus there is a part time Disability Liaison Officer available to assist you obtain services such a peer note takers, Alternative Assessment Arrangements (AAA), radio loop hearing aids and so on. There is also a Disability Liaison Officer to advise on matters relating to Off Campus Learning students.
As with most things these services will not be offered automatically, and will be easier to arrange if you contact the University early. It is too late for you to ask for assistance when you have already missed the first assignment – but if you need assistance make sure you contact the Disability Liaison Officer, Brenda Dack – Ph: (03) 5122 6465.
There is no benefit to you to try to undertake studies without telling anyone that you might need help. There is no shame in asking or seeking help because University studies can be stressful. No one will force you to use any particular assistance offered, nor will your degree be different if you need extra support. The system is there simply to ensure that everyone receives a fair go in gaining access to an education.
