Extension Policy PDF Print E-mail

Sometimes, due to circumstances beyond your control, uni studies can become secondary to other things happening in your life. If this has happened to you, you may need to get an extension on an assignment or exam.

As of 2009, to obtain an extension for assessment during the semester (for example, an assignment) you must apply for special consideration, by using a standard University application form. There is separate form for end of semester exams/assessment.

According to Monash policy, the purpose of special consideration is to give a student whose work for a particular piece of assessment has been adversely affected by exceptional circumstances beyond their control, a further opportunity to demonstrate their ability.

Common situations which may give rise to a successful claim for special consideration would be an acute illness (physical or mental), loss or bereavement (for example, a family member dies), or other hardship (for example, being a victim of crime, sudden loss of income).

Special consideration is not automatically granted, and some courses, for example, those that involve Project Management, may not allow extensions.

The completed application must be submitted with supporting documentation, that is, a reason why you are seeking the extension, for example, a medical certificate stating that the doctor has examined you and that you were unable to study on a particular date/s, or a similar certificate from a registered social worker, lawyer or psychiatrist.

Other documents which may need to be supplied are a police report, or a statutory declaration from yourself or others.

It may be best to speak to a staff member at the Faculty Office before applying for special consideration to ascertain what evidence may be required to submit.

You should submit your documents to the faculty Student Services Office directly.

The application must be submitted no later than two days after the due date of the assessment, or in the case of an end of semester exam/assessment, until five working days before the exam, or for two days after your last exam.

You will be informed in most cases by email as to whether your claim has been successful.
