University can be a very challenging time in your life, particularly at first. As well as the academic side of uni, which involves a lot more self-reliance than school, you will face lots of challenges in life, particularly if you have moved away from home to study. If you know where to look for help when you need it, however, you can make your uni experience a lot easier and more rewarding — you're not alone in feeling a bit lost.

This information is about services for you in and out of uni.

STUDYING

Uni study can be very different to other study. Some students can mistake a lack of supervision for a lack of work and not go to classes or keep up with the work required, which can lead to negative results for intelligent students.

For study tips see the MUGSU brochure or the MUGSU website tab 'Study Skills'.

MUGSU can help with many study-related issues. For example;

  • Referrals to help you find who you need to help you
  • Study, Assignment and Revision Tips (see website)
  • Time Management
  • Completing forms
  • APC response forms & hearings

A commonly-used guide is that for every contact hour of classes, a student should spend approximately two in private study. While this may be important, the  truth is different students study differently and with different efficiency. The aim when studying should be to 'Study Smarter, not Harder'.

The Monash library is also a useful resource. Learning skills advisors can help (on an ad-hoc basis or by arrangement on a one-on-one basis) in any particular area of study, or on a particular assignment/assessment.

If you're thinking of quitting uni, look at the MUGSU website tab 'Thinking of Quitting Uni', or speak to an advisor at Health Wellbeing and Development.

Appropriate accommodation is extremely important, as a happy, restful home environment is an important factor in succeeding at uni. When choosing a place to live, consider the transport costs and options to uni.

GETTING USED TO UNI

  • Learn the structure / facilities of the uni
  • Learn the rules of the uni
  • Learn the language and jargon used e.g. Letter of intent to exclude
  • Learn some policies e.g. special consideration, deferment etc. (see appropriate MUGSU brochures/ Student Support website info).
  • Learn cut-off / enrolment / census dates.
  • Develop contact with lecturers / tutors
